Just watched a fascinating programme on the autopsy of a very well preserved Woolly Mammoth found in Siberia. Very interesting, but.....one set of scientists want to clone it using the Asian elephant whilst a geneticist wants to genetically alter an Asian elephant to produce Mammoths with a view to repopulating Siberia as, apparently, this will help with global warming etc. Now, whilst I think it would be fantastic to see Mammoths back on the Earth, part of me is extremely worried by all this. Sometimes I think scientists do things just because they can without looking at the long term effects their actions can have on the planet and also I am extremely worried that, if theyre successful, there will be another species with wonderful ivory to hunt. Thoughts?
