Just watched this new British sci-fi movie The Machine. Ive heard lots of chatter about it over the last few month, and while its eerie, dystopian aesthetic can feel a little oversaturated at times, I dont think Ive watched a movie that required you to put together as much of the plot through inference as this since I saw Primer for the first time — and I mean this as a compliment. Its a dense, complicated, terrifying film, but its also incredibly rich and rewarding. The plot is constructed with all the delicate intricacy of a spider web, and the degree of focus required to understand the narrative leads to a fascinating level of engagement between viewers and the on-screen action. Recommended for hard sci-fi fans looking for something dark. B+
