Just went on my first date with a Chinese woman. It went well. She really enjoyed talking about cultural comparisons. I asked her if men treated women differently in China. She said, contrary to the popular presumptions, the society is in many ways less patriarchal. Her reasoning is the interesting part: the one child policy creates an atmosphere of super-competition. Men just cant rely on the wealth of home ownership, and vehicles. They have to pull their weight around the home, and moreover that this has implications on domestic abuse too -- all women have the security of finding another match. Its funny because third wave feminism tends to discount competition as a masculine trait that creates patriarchy. But that testimony would leave me to believe that it can be easily perverted. #China #culture #gender
