Just when I was going off Facebook and MidDay as time wasters, I came across a really good piece in the paper on Women in the work place by Hemal Asher. Not only was it well thought out but unlike most of us writers, she did not employ her signature style (in her case, her penchant for humorous word play) She accorded the subject matter (and reader), the seriousness it deserved. And now, on FB, I read a pertinent post by Aparajita Krishna on how important it is for all of us to raise our voice through social media. I agree, and since, social media is the only platform available to us mango ppl, lets rain gutlis on heads swollen with their invincibility! Heres the first gutli! Thrown with all my might at social columnists, and news channels. Do you realise that your eulogies and pics of the wealthy raises their equity in society from mere socialites to prominent stake holders/pillars of society? Add frequency to flattery, ie the fact that you flatter them day in and day out (Malvika Sanghvi and Shobha De) you raise them to icons. Malvika ran a pic today that merely showed the excellence of some unknown barber in London as far as I could see, but this is how she described a man with criminal charges against him. .... to mark the momentous occasion of reaching the half century mark, heres a picture of the cricket impresario looking ... distinguished On the face of it, a harmless PR exercise that will get her an invite but it covertly glamourises a figure still shrouded in corruption charges. Greed in society has been spawned by flaunting wealth and power in the media. And that greed is what, in turn, has spawned some really horrible women like Shoma Chaudhury and men like Tejpal. They symbolise what journalists become when they no longer draw the line between monitoring power and brokering it - pompous pimps.
