Just when you thought you couldnt adore elephants any more, here is some insight on the cultural history of elephants in India. From Sarita Kaushal, During previous times in India when households were allowed to domesticate and own elephants, they often became beloved members of those families, offering immense devotion in return. We once had a teacher from Kerala who told us that in her state and some others, captive elephants used to be regularly assigned the role of nannies because of the care, love and protection they offer children. This is not to make a case for the capture of wild elephants of course...just to demonstrate that cruelty was not part of the bond between these gentle pachyderms and humans in times of yore.
