Just wondering if anyone else enjoyed the seven-part miniseries on public broadcasting about the Roosevelts? I have always loved American history, especially the Civil War. But the Roosevelt project touched me in a different way because a small part of the events occurred during my early years. When FDR died in Warm Springs, GA on April 12, 1945, I lived just 39 miles away in Columbus, GA and had my fifth birthday seven days later. Rachel probably was in LaGrange, a distance of only 30 miles, where she had just turned four. Perhaps this is silly but I experienced a touch of melancholy watching the fourteen hour long documentary. I was disappointed but not surprised by lifestyles of even great leaders. But there was one overwhelming and dynamic thread throughout the entire story. Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt faced physical challenges that would have stopped most people in their tracks. Eleanor Roosevelt was rejected by her own mother (who called her granny) because she was not attractive in her appearance. She had a lonely childhood. But the three of them learned from their challenges and chose to be optimistic and they proved to be strong leaders when the future of this country demanded it. Do I agree with everything they promoted and supported? No. But it is summed up in FDRs remarks when taking the presidency during the Great Depression. In my words, the essence of what he said was, Dont be paralyzed by fear. Do something. And if that doesnt work, try something else. But dont grovel in self-pity and quit. A lesson we all should learn. Especially Spirit-filled believers.
