Justice Minister Utoni Nujoma has condemned Morocco for its illegal occupation of Western Sahara, also known as the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic. Nujoma appeals to Africans to stand together and continue calling for the people of the Western Sahara to be given an opportunity through a referendum to express their will. He says Namibia will continue to express solidarity with the people of Western Sahara and demand the end of the illegal occupation of that country under the leadership of the Polisario Front. The Justice Minister made the remarks at Swakopmund on Tuesday as part of the ongoing lectures on Agenda 2063. The lectures by Cabinet Ministers, are part of the continent-wide celebration of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity, OAU, that has since been transformed into the African Union, AU. The United Nations has been engaged in efforts to organise a referendum in Western Sahara for the inhabitants to decide whether they want to be an independent state or part of Morocco. Morocco annexed the northern part of the Western Sahara in 1976, after Spain withdrew from the territory in November 1975. By 1979 when Mauritania withdrew from the southern part of the territory, Morocco annexed the whole country.
