K.J. Yesudas came up with one of the usual comment on the womens - TopicsExpress

K.J. Yesudas came up with one of the usual comment on the womens dressing. Lack of liberal attitude and conservative nature that he embodies came out as the statement “What should be covered must be covered. Women should not trouble others by wearing jeans.” This comment got some of the obvious supporters, from the Islamic organizations in Kerala. The crux of the view presented by Yesudas is primarily that of the modesty. The call is to women to be modest. Islamist organizations which supported him too have continually asserted the need for modest dressing by women in multiple occasions. Obviously the views of Islamist organizations in this context is in line with the views presented Yesudas. The manner in which the modesty has been conceived in relation to women was used across time and space to restrict her to the spaces and attires. In Kerala we have seen this argument being continuously used by different religious groups, public figure and prominent members of state machinery. Unless the concept of modesty is not adequately challenged, comment such as presented by Yesudas will make appearance in Kerala public space again and again from more and more prominent public figures. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter remains that, Yesudas is not an exception but the rule.
