KAHUNA LAPA’AU ‘O HAWAI’I makanaaloha.org/kahuna.htm HISTORY OF HA-WAI-I For countless generations, Kahuna have been the guardians of the core elements of the Hawaiian Culture that takes them back to the begining of time; Mu (Lemuira) and I’o (Divine Creations). “Kahuna,” literally translated, means “the secret,” connoting their role as the caretakers of Divine Ancient knowledge. Na Kahuna are the Grandmasters of Healing, Health, Wisdom of the Ancients and Na Kumu’Ola (Teachers of Healing) of the traditional Mo’okuauhau (geneology) and of the sacred healing arts, crafts and skills of All that is of The Divine Creater (the I AM) of Ke Akua I’o ‘O Talani. They are the spiritual leaders of guidance of the Hawaiian peoples, thus taking great care in maintaining the spiritual connection between the mortal people and the Akua Ao (Gods) and (Goddess). The Ancestral Wisdom of the sacred healing, education, crafts, arts and skills have been handed down through the Mo’okuauhau generations through the Breath of Ha and on the wings of the Tupuna (elders), on the voices of the Tahun (High Temple Priests and Priestess) and through the spiritual connection with the Divine Mana Ka ‘Oia’ I’o. The Kahunas role in Hawaiian culture was uprooted and they went under ground with the arrival of the missionaries and western culture in the late 100s and 1800s. A New Western god was now the focus of worship and offering. Many of the heiaus (temples) and important icons were destroyed. Hawaiis peoples were encouraged to abandon the traditional Ka Wa Kahiko (ancient wisdoms) of our culture and our way of life; the Ahupuaa Systems. Many of the Hawaiian Kanaka Maoli practices, Manao (Mind), Kino (Body) and Uhane (Spiritual), were banned or heavily regulated. Many hundreds of Hawaiians and Kahuna Lapaau wisdom keepers went to their graves with broken spirits and hearts. They were laden with sadness because they could not live their lifestyle and could not serve their peoples with the Lapaau skills of the Tupuna and Tahuna, which was interwoven in the Mookuauhau (genealogy) of their families. In 1874, King David Kalakaua summoned from the various islands the few remaining accomplished Tahuna and invited then to attend an Aha conference at the Palace. High temple priests who were skilled in the art of pure spiritual healing, were among those summoned. They wished to record their knowledge which had been passed down orally in the preisthood from Mookuauhau to generations for centuries, but which had never been recorded in writing. The Tahuna possessed the Golden Keys to the Gate Way of the Hawaiian Culture, Cosmos, Universe... to the secrets of the Hawaii Kapu; healing, health, diet, cleansing, maiola, hoomanamaiola, laau kahea, ect., and the King wanted to preserve their ancient wisdom lest it be lost forever... So, we live On, coming ever forward with these Golden Keys from the Golden Realms, and the few remaining Kaneuhanenui (Men of great Spirit) and Kawahineuhanenui (Women of great Spirit). We live on through the Ka Leo O Na Kahuna Lapaau Puu Honua O Hawaii - Hale O Lono, teaching of the Empowerment of our peoples of Hawaii and the World. These Kahuna are continuing the Advancing of the Golden Skills of Human Healing, Health, Education, Caring with Compassion and Spiritual Re-Connection to: Return of Io & Rising of Mu. Now is a critial time to share and teach this Divine Wisdom of the Ancients, Deep in the Heartbeat of HaWai-i. E Hoola A Lahui I Ta Puuwai Ola O Hawaii I Ta Poe I Ta Honua.
