With the event set to take place this Sunday, UAP Insurance Company has donated the 10million to Rotary Uganda who are organisers of the run-for-cancer sporting event. The dummy cheque was handed over yesterday morning to Aggrey Kankunda, of Rotary Uganda along with other partners of The Aids Support Organization (TASO) at the Insurance head-office at Nakawa Business Park. The insurance company also came in partnership with TASO in attempt to provide extra services to the participants with an offer for a free HIV testing and basic medical check-ups during the event as part of its “UAP Wellness Program”. Former Tanzanian President, Ali Hassan Mwinyi will be the chief guest runner on the event that is in its third year. The charity run has continued to attract more and more companies in form of sponsors that are willing to facilitate. Sponsors, participants and contributors will be running in a move that is aimed towards the completion of a specialized Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital, as cancer continues to become one of the killer diseases in the country killing about 60,000 people per year. The Rotary Centenary Cancer Ward at St Raphael of St Francis Hospital Nsambya is planned to have a 36-bed capacity which is estimated to cost about 1.3billion shillings and is currently in its final stages of construction. “We are glad to be part of such a noble cause that will ensure more Ugandans are screened for early detection of cancer and the provision of better medical care for cancer patients,” said UAP Assistant General Manager Operations Paul Muhame.
