KANO JUDICIAL WORKERS BEGIN STRIKE 04.01.2015. •Wants judiciary’s autonomy Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, Kano State branch, yesterday ordered all judicial workers in the state to proceed on indefinite strike, to compel Federal Government to recognize the autonomy of the judiciary as an arm of government. The action was a part of a planned nationwide strike embarked upon by judiciary workers. The state secretary of JUSUN, comrade Suleman Aliu, confirmed that, the body has ordered all its members from 2nd January, 2015, to proceed on an indefinite strike action, adding that, all court houses in the state are to be shut down indefinitely. He said, the action was necessitated by the failure of the Federal Government to implement a verdict of a Federal High court, on 13 January 2014, where the court made a pronouncement and interpretation on the true status of an autonomous judiciary. “Today, we in Kano judiciary have joined our counterparts from all over Nigeria in the nationwide strike action as directed by our national leaders, we passed the directives to all workers in Kano and they have complied, we went round today we are satisfied, with the level of compliance.” “Before now, we went on a nationwide warning strike, to draw the attention of the Federal and State government to this wise decision of a court with competent jurisdiction. The governments at Federal and states levels have failed to implement the decisions of the Federal High Court,” Aliu said. A senior judicial worker, who spoke to Sunday Mirrorunder the condition of anonymity, explained that, the effects of the strike would be tantamount to sufferings being meted out to those in detention, pointing out that, cases would not be heard, while police cells would witness congestions across the country. Explaining that, those apprehended for capital offences, that are not bail able would have to remain in police custody in contravention to the provision of the law that states that they must be arraigned with 24 hours THE NATION JANUARY 4, 2015.
