KARACHI: The government has decided to launch targeted action against terrorists, target killers, extortionists and kidnappers in Karachi, said Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. Briefing the media after the special cabinet meeting on Karachi law and order situation, the interior minister said the targeted action will be led by Rangers and be supported by the police. He said all political parties agreed that there was no need of army in Karachi. Nisar Ali Khan said federal intelligence agencies will provide assistance to Rangers and police in the targeted operation against criminal elements in the city. He said action in the port city will be above any politics. “We have to steer Karachi out of this situation,” the minister asserted. The interior minister announced that action will also be taken against militant wings of political parties. Nisar said that several of the reservations held by DG Rangers such as arrested criminals being released had been addressed via policy guidelines made by the federal and provincial government. The targeted action will be overseen by a committee led by Chief Minister Sindh, Qaim Ali Shah which will meet at least once a week. A second operational committee which will be led by DG Rangers will meet on a daily basis. Nisar also announced that a committee comprising of civil society, senior media members and ordinary residents of the city will be formed to monitor the targeted action. The Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh has also been given authority to revamp the police force and identify weakness along with arresting criminal elements within the force. The interior minister also refuted claims that the IGP Sindh or Chief Secretary has been changed.
