MTGJudge Classroom: Advanced MTG One simple rule. Before you comment, READ EVERYTHING in this post. Take time to try to understand it. Ill keep it as simple as possible. For the love of all that is related to MTG, refrain from commenting/replying until Ive posted the final part. Ill break it into multiple posts in the same thread as how things interact will be dumbd down. No offense meant. Also, respond/reply in English. Im having another Judge who is not Filipino join in. He does not understand Tagalog (you could try using French on him, he understands that). As requested last night. This will be a very simple (and extremely simplified) version of the how Continuous Effects interact with one another. In judge terms, we call this the 7 Layer Cake. 1. Copy Effects 2. Control Effects 3. Text-Changing Effects 4. Type-changing Effects 5. Color-changing Effects 6. Abilities layer 7. P/T Layer Lesson 1: Not all the layers are used often but each one will give you a headache when everything happens all together. Lesson 2: Sometimes we overthink. The answer might just be staring us in the face. The first 5 layers arent used very often in Standard, as such, Ill just give a brief idea and a card that fits this layer so youd have an idea. Layer 1: Copy effects. Think CLONE, Fated Infatuation... These cards are perfect examples of Copy Effects. Copiable values on a card will be discussed in a future class. Layer 2: Control Effects. Here we have fun cards like Control Magic, Ray of Command, Harness the Reins. Basically anything that changes control of a permanent/spell falls here. How do these interact together? I use Control Magic on your Clone copying Sun Titan. Clone is STILL a Sun Titan but instead of you, I now control it. Layer 3 and 4: Text changing is very rare in todays MTG but theres still a card out there in standard. Trait Doctoring. Type-changing doesnt happen very often but one of the most popular cards for this is Blood Moon. Interaction? The text of Blood Moon reads: All non-basic lands are Mountains. Using a card like Magical Hack (the old version of Trait Doctoring), i change Blood Moons text to read All non-basic lands are Plains. *post break 1*
