KATHMANDU, AUG 21 - Hindus all over the country have been celebrating Janai Purnima and Rakshya Bandhan with great gusto, devotion and splendor in the Kathmandu Valley on Wednesday. Thousands of devotees have been gathering at various temples in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur since early morning today to mark the festival. On this very day various communities, including Brahmins and Chhetris, change Janais (sacred yellow cotton threads) slung from the shoulder and also tied Tago (also sacred threads) sanctified by priests chanting the Gayatri Mantra as a symbol of protection. The Newar community, however, mark this festival as the beginning of the nine-day festival called Gunhu Punhi. Newars coat the threshold of their houses with mud and offer food to gods. They also offer food and bougainvillea (gunakeshari flower) to frogs on banana leaves.
