KATSINA LG POLLS EXTENSION: PDM STANDS BY BOYCOTT Despite the extension of the local government elections in Katsina by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) says it will still not partake in the elections. The PDM had called for an expanded state exco meeting to review the extension and explore the possibility of participating in the rescheduled election which the party earlier said it is boycotting. Speaking with Daily Trust on phone at the end of the meeting, the party’s spokesman, Nasiru Sauri said the party has not shifted ground and has maintained its earlier stand of boycotting the election. He said the meeting which was chaired by the state chairman, Yushau Armayau, believed that the SIEC would not be fair to participating parties giving trends of event in neighbouring states where elections were held. “Given our meagre resources, taking part in the elections shall amount to wasting scarce resources as it is definitely going to be a one way affair where the ruling party PDP will be declared winner in all the positions”, he said. It could be recalled that the SIEC has pushed forward the election by 35 days following what it said was as a result of pleas and complaints by participating parties. Despite the shift, the opposition parties APC,LP and PDM have continued in their resolve not to participate in the election. The election which was earlier slated for August 2 will now hold on September 6 this year.
