KIA TOA SENIOR A – 24 MAY 2014 MATCH REPORT ROUND 11 AGAINST COLLEGE OLD BOYS Having won the toss, College elected to play into a strong south-westerly wind at FMG Stadium. Kias had a point to prove to turn around the first round drubbing and by half time were in touch, trailing just 16 : 18 (1 try to 2) and giving a good account of themselves. Possession was being contested and the backs looking dangerous when the ball was being moved. The second half was always going to be a challenging task, with no let up in the wind. It wasn’t helped by COB scoring first with their 3rd try, resulting in Kias having to play “catch up rugby” for the remainder of the match. When “chancing our arm” any small mistakes were immediately pounced upon by the opposition. This saw the game being played from one end of the Stadium to the other. Having been down by 16 : 25 we got back to 27 : 28 through some excellent goal kicking, in the difficult conditions, by 1st five Jade Te Rure. However the weather had more in store. There was a heavy rain down pour in the last ten minutes and this significantly hindered our attack. Not only was slippery ball spilled, but it became very dark and there was a need to turn the Stadium lights on. Failure to control the ball saw COB extend the score to 27 : 33, the final result. While disappointed the Team know they can beat our long term rivals. Our games with them have a strong resemblance with last season, when despite losing both round robin games, we won the semi final encounter which was the one that mattered. So there is still plenty to play for and the Team are determined to push on. To their credit the senior players had a bit of a “stock-take” in the changing sheds after the match. No one is any doubt where we have to lift our game. Jade scored 22 points for the match, with a converted try & 5 penalty goals. The other try scorer was tight head prop Toetu Mapuilesua, who toiled well for the 80 minutes. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Inia Rasovo 2–Fraser Stone, 1–Tevita Taufui Kia Toa Senior 2nds vs Linton Senior 2nds - Bill Brown 1pm. Win to Kia Toa 30 v 12 The boys had a good solid game carrying on the way they finished last week against FOBO albeit we took a little time to get into the game. Half time ahead 13 to 7 and running out to a good win 30 to 12. The forwards are starting to hit their straps and delivering to the game plan and what they have practised setting up some good platforms for the slick backline on the weekend. This bodes well for the remainder of the season and it was good to see the forwards often hitting up through a number of phases drawing in the Linton boys and then releasing for the backs. Much more patience and team work paid dividends. Bruce Folau had a good strong game scoring 2 tries along with Ah Daung Malu from full back also scoring 2 tries with his speed getting him around the defence. Steven George had another good day with the boot on a windy day with 2 penalties, 2 conversions and 2 that only just missed both hitting the posts. Hard to pick the 3, 2, 1s this Saturday with the starting 15 and bench players all playing well and no one having an off day. All the boys deserved to be mentioned so with good numbers turning out all positions will be keenly contested as we head to the end of the season. Good to have a full bench who all slotted in easily to provide the impact when changes are made. Not quite a full 80 minutes but as one ex-player on the side-line said he hadn’t seen such a structured and solid performance from the 2nds for some time. Bye next week and only Te Kawau on 14 June to complete the 1st round before the top 6 play-offs. Don’t know how we fluked the long week-end bye but with the 1st having two games over the long week end still 2 Kia Toa Senior games to follow. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Bruce Folau, 2–Manifo Malu, 1–Steven George HT 13 v 7, FT 30 v 12 Presidents vs Te Kawau.( TK) Bill Brown Park 2.45pm TK have always been a tough side to play and in particular to beat. TK would have won the majority of our games in recent years. So it was going to be a challenge to maintain our current unbeaten run. While our numbers weren’t as high as some previous weeks we still had 3 or 4 reserves. The assigned ref failed to show, which was a bad start and a possible impact on the final result. In the first half we had the strong wind at our backs which we used as much as possible. However with in no time we’d let two soft tries through when we forgot how to tackle. 12 to nil, with 15 minutes gone. Realising we would need to score next or we were gone. We pulled it together in the forwards and managed to take the ball forward and carry on with the second phase. Putting Paul in a position of scoring not just one but two tries within a matter of minutes. Craig kicked both conversations and put us at 14 to 12 at half time. It was handy that the wind died down in the second half.. TK came back with a vengeance and seemed like we played the entire second half in our 22. The pressure was relentless, we stumped out numerous attacks on our try line but finally by spinning the ball out wide TK scored in the corner. While there was contention regarding the player being out of play as he scored the try, it didn’t matter as the ref declared a fair try. 14 to 17 with some time to play, but unfortunately this was to be the final score. The team have a problem of self-imploding when they determine a ref making incorrect calls, hopefully we have a union ref next time. Linton will be another tough game after the long weekend break. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Paul, 2–Hami, 1–Logan Women vs Linton. Bill Brown Park 1pm The Linton team were short of players and five of our girls ended up playing for them. The raging wind meant that the ball was hard to throw around with accuracy. Kia’s did a great job in controlling the ball. The team has a number of young girls with a huge amount of pace. I am informed on great authority that 15 penalties were against us with 35 being awarded against Linton. Final score was 74 to nil.
