KISUMU COUNTY TO ESTABLISH SPORTS ACADEMY By Salome Alwanda The Kisumu County government intends to establish a sports academy in a move aimed at identifying and nurturing talents among the youth, the governor, Jacktone Ranguma has said. Ranguma made the remarks while receiving trophies won by Maseno school and Sinyolo girl’s secondary school during the just concluded Kenya Inter Counties Sports and Cultural Association (KICOSCA) held in Uganda. “The county will identify youth talents early and facilitate them to participate in competitions that will enable them to be recognized at both national and international levels “he said. He lauded the schools for not only participating in the East African Regional Tournament held in Uganda recently but for making an unequivocal statement that they are a force to reckon with. “You have done us proud by bringing home, 2 gold medals in ajua and netball, 5 silver medals in folksong, set piece, women basketball, draughts and tennis and 1 silver medal as overall runners up from KICOSCA,” he said. Two teams had won 1 gold medal in hockey for girls and 1 silver medal in hockey for boys from the East African Regional Tournament. The governor underscored the role of sports in bringing people of diverse backgrounds together irrespective of their political, cultural, social or economic backgrounds. “Besides transforming people’s social and economic well-being, sports is known to promote, uphold and sustain the cultural heritage of our people,” he remarked adding that the activity also helps to shape character and discipline.
