We have four types of contraceptive: 1:Hormonal contraceptives 2:Barrier contraceptives 3:Intrauterine devices(coils) 4:sterlirizatio n Hormonal contraceptives primarily alters the reproductive hormones that are released during menstrual cycle,menstrual cycle is counted from day one of bleeding,the cycle ingeneral lasts 28days.The menstrual cycle is divided into three broad phases: 1:The follicular phase,(day 1-13) during this phase,the growth of a follicle in the ovary is stimulated by one of the reproductive hormones called )FSH)this hormone releases the ovumÖegg,FSH,al so stimuleates the lining f uterusÖwomb,in preparation for pregnancy. 2:Ovulation phase(day 13-16)this phase is conception phase,a Luteinising hormone triggers the release of the ovum from a mature follicle,this reliease is the once reffered to as OVULATION,once released,the ovum travels to the fallopian tubes where if sperms are present,fertili sation takes place.A woman has just 3days per month which she can be pregnant. 3:The luteal phase(day 16-28)at this stage,3rd reproductive hormone,called progesterone is released,if the ovum was fertilised,prog esterone sustains the pregnancy,if no fertilization took place,hormone progesterone stops and the lining of uterus is send as menstrual blood.
