KNSG TO TAKE OVER KUNCHI IRRIGATION PROJECT....KWANKWASO Kano state government plans to take over the abandoned Kunchi irrigation project, started by the Federal Government during the defunct PTF, and other similar federal irrigation projects across the state. Disclosing this during a meeting with farmers groups in the state at the Government House, Kano, the state governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso explained that such projects were suspended over the years despite their huge economic viability. He explained that already, the state government has formally contacted the Federal Government, seeking permission to take over the irrigation project at Kunchi, as part of the government’s agricultural development and poverty alleviation efforts. The governor disclosed that his administration recently awarded contracts for various irrigation projects in Magaga dam along Gwarzo road, adding that the second Phase of Kura irrigation project will also be given adequate attention. Governor Kwankaso stated that plans are in the offing to engage more agricultural experts towards improving farming and related agricultural activities, since Kano has the potential to grow food for local consumption and export. He said that considering the importance of agriculture, his government established six agriculture related institutes out of 22 various skills acquisition institutions it established for youth empowerment. Governor Kwankwaso then called on authorities particularly in the northern part of the country to give agriculture the much needed attention to enhance food security, create jobs for the teeming population and to step up internally generated revenue.
