KPFK News AUDIO: The nation’s labor leader was in Los Angeles over the weekend to speak out on over-incarceration and sentencing disparities between young men of color and their white counterparts. Richard Trumka, the president of the AFL-CIO, also offered his strong support for Proposition 47, a proposal that would reduce the penalties for simple drug possession and shoplifting. Although prison guard and law enforcement unions have led the charge to increase penalties and incarcerate more Californians, Trumka says labor should lead efforts to give people a second chance. Pacificas Ernesto Arce was at the rally held in front of Homeboy Industries where Trumka praised Prop 47 and called for more fair sentencing laws. He files this report from Los Angeles.
