KWANS GIFT--I have a friend named Kwan. Born in China, raised in Highland Park, he lives in Alhambra. I met him 50 years ago at Cal State LA. He decided to buy a used car for Christmas, not for himself, but to help someone in El Sereno recover from a life of misfortune, to be reborn with another chance. Jerry lost his infant son to illness and his teenage daughter to suicide. His marriage fell apart and he turned to drinking only to destroy his liver. Now reformed at 60 with poor health, he struggled to work as a handyman, but needed a car he couldnt afford. Kwan found a Subaru station wagon that would be a perfect. On hearing the plan to play Santa Claus, the seller gave him a terrific deal for $800. He took up a collection from friends and college buddies, and on Christmas morning, he and his wife surprised Jerry with this gift. Jerry was in tears. The card read, God works miracles through people, let a miracle be you. This isn’t the first time Kwan did something like this. We are fortunate to have people like him living in Alhambra.
