Two divergent paths are moving in opposite directions — away from each other. Things that are divergent are diverging — moving away from a path or a standard. A teacher who comes to work in a clown outfit is being divergent; a clown who comes to work in a business suit is also being divergent. A stream is divergent if it is moving in the opposite direction of a river. A politician who is divergent might leave his political party. Divergent people and things are changing course — moving off the beaten path. Losing my timing this late In my career? And where are the clowns? There ought to be clowns. Well, maybe next year • Send In The Clowns by Milt Jackson youtube/watch?v=GAgGu3KRf8Y • Sarah Vaughan sings Send in the Clowns youtube/watch?v=2PI_xb6jSD4&list=RD2PI_xb6jSD4 “…In the land of the skunk, the unconscious man with half a nose is king…” youtube/watch?v=kFm_LSTXlaQ&list=RDkFm_LSTXlaQ&index=1 As man is in conflict less with other people than with his own folly, so does wisdom smiles three times at the foolishness” of human beings. The first smile smiles at the young, who know nothing…the second, at the fools who know too little…and the third, at the old who know too much. These three smiles are allegorical, metaphors for rhetoric that is altered somewhat, however. Most significant is the second smile, often referred to in prose as the clowns, to provide a perspective from both extremes of the lifespan, foreseeing and/or remembering the follies of love. Much of this perspective shows that man, who always tries to exceed his limitations, is a more suitable and common comedy figure than woman. In comedies, the women are usually satisfied with the role traditionally allotted them, and try to keep it. The men are dreamers who seem comical because they pretend to be something they are not. For example, man studies and suffers to be a ministerial student when his calling is obviously much more earthbound. Man tells his 19 year old son that being young in itself can be a trifle ridiculous, yet he with his 18 year old bride is himself busy renewing his non-renewable youth seeing himself as a magnificent lover and a devoted husband, losing on both counts. Wisdom pinpoints the cause of this folly. Men feel they must maintain their dignity at all costs, or at least the illusion of such. Men hide behind the appearance of piety, youth, and physical prowess to escape the reality of their weaknesses. Therefore, to force them into facing reality, their false sense of dignity must be stripped away. Wisdom is a master at uncovering the folly of human beings who do not have “true”, conventional heroes because wisdom does not see people as such gigantic figures as man does. Many people who populated life are common place, non-dramatic, and often humorous creatures. There is not a true, single villain or angel made to do anything, yet only the temptation of putting in a few buffoons to pacify the sacrificial fools is what has permeated the separation of good and evil, heaven and earth, right from wrong. Although subtly hidden in seemingly naturalistic style, elements of farce and melodrama are used as dividing tools to deflate the pompous and arrogant characters to their true size. “…The Job of the Conscious is to make the unconscious conscious of its unconscious behavior…” youtube/watch?v=v3CTiCadciM&index=1&list=RDv3CTiCadciM The Skunk of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering Semite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that the man with half a nose was to carry Excalibur. And then she cut off half his nose with it. THAT is why he is your king and indeed, NOT mine. https://youtube/watch?v=NGziTYJ_F4I&list=RDNGziTYJ_F4I Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College By Thomas Gray Ye distant spires, ye antique towers, That crown the watery glade, Where grateful Science still adores Her Henrys holy Shade; And ye, that from the stately brow Of Windsors heights the expanse below Of grove, of lawn, of mead survey, Whose turf, whose shade, whose flowers among Wanders the hoary Thames along His silver-winding way. Ah happy hills, ah pleasing shade, Ah fields beloved in vain, Where once my careless childhood strayed, A stranger yet to pain! I feel the gales, that from ye blow, A momentary bliss bestow, As waving fresh their gladsome wing, My weary soul they seem to soothe, And, redolent of joy and youth, To breathe a second spring. Say, Father Thames, for thou hast seen Full many a sprightly race Disporting on thy margent green The paths of pleasure trace, Who foremost now delight to cleave With pliant arm thy glassy wave? The captive linnet which enthrall? What idle progeny succeed To chase the rolling circles speed, Or urge the flying ball? While some on earnest business bent Their murmuring labours ply Gainst graver hours, that bring constraint To sweeten liberty: Some bold adventurers disdain The limits of their little reign, And unknown regions dare descry: Still as they run they look behind, They hear a voice in every wind, And snatch a fearful joy. Gay hope is theirs by fancy fed, Less pleasing when possessed; The tear forgot as soon as shed, The sunshine of the breast: Their buxom health of rosy hue, Wild wit, invention ever-new, And lively cheer of vigour born; The thoughtless day, the easy night, The spirits pure, the slumbers light, That fly the approach of morn. Alas, regardless of their doom, The little victims play! No sense have they of ills to come, Nor care beyond today: Yet see how all around em wait The ministers of human fate, And black Misfortunes baleful train! Ah, show them where in ambush stand To seize their prey the murtherous band! Ah, tell them, they are men! These shall the fury Passions tear, The vultures of the mind, Disdainful Anger, pallid Fear,And Shame that skulks behind; Or pining Love shall waste their youth, Or Jealousy with rankling tooth, That inly gnaws the secret heart, And Envy wan, and faded Care, Grim-visaged comfortless Despair, And Sorrows piercing dart. Ambition this shall tempt to rise, Then whirl the wretch from high, To bitter Scorn a sacrifice, And grinning Infamy. The stings of Falsehood those shall try, And hard Unkindness altered eye, That mocks the tear it forced to flow; And keen Remorse with blood defiled, And moody Madness laughing wild Amid severest woe. Lo, in the vale of years beneath A grisly troop are seen, The painful family of Death, More hideous than their Queen: This racks the joints, this fires the veins, That every labouring sinew strains, Those in the deeper vitals rage: Lo, Poverty, to fill the band, That numbs the soul with icy hand, And slow-consuming Age. To each his sufferings: all are men, Condemned alike to groan; The tender for anothers pain, The unfeeling for his own. Yet ah! why should they know their fate? Since sorrow never comes too late, And happiness too swiftly flies. Thought would destroy their paradise. No more; where ignorance is bliss, Tis folly to be wise. The Poem is from Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College. It is considered one of the top schools in the UK and when the good-ole-boys graduate they are given the complete collections of Thomas Gray with this poem highlighted. Im sure the link between the two isnt a coincidence. It says IF ignorance is bliss, then it is better to be blissful than to be wise. Its a conditional, not a declarative statement. However, ignorance is bliss asserts the condition rather than suggests it. It also doesnt suggest that intellect would be a fault, only that one wishes they could be ignorant. https://youtube/watch?v=02aoIG7fXKQ&list=RD02aoIG7fXKQ The quote comes from a poem by Thomas Gray: thomasgray.org/cgi-bin/display.cgi?text=odec It appears at the end of the poem (lines 99 & 100). I like the analysis done here: helium/items/2421609-poetry-analysis-ode-on-a-distant-prospect-of-eton-college-by-thomas-gray Its a lengthy three pages, but goes into adequate detail. https://youtube/watch?v=-pvld1719PU The saying itself has taken on two different meanings in its current use. The first is by the uneducated who use it as an excuse for not knowing something (yes, Ive heard it used in this context). The second is a way of mocking those who are happy because they dont know any better. Id say your first local Lord example is close, but rather than self-scrutinizing, I see it used to scrutinize others. https://youtube/watch?v=JFb447iprTg&list=RDJFb447iprTg
