Kalkidan is so determined to fit into our culture, or at least - TopicsExpress

Kalkidan is so determined to fit into our culture, or at least parts of it. You should see her try to use a fork and knife to cut something. Its all a puzzle – what goes where and with what hand and which way is up with the knife. Shell just be sawing away, and the knife is dull side down. She lines the knife up inside the fork tines in the air before she spears the meat with them. And she just keeps working at it, for about 15 minutes last night with the chicken. She wont give up. She is also working on learning the US states. I told you she had been studying the puzzle and the atlas. Today, we found a blank map in a workbook and she started filling in state names! I was amazed at how many she had learned. Things I cant explain to her: Freddy is dancing at Kroger again. If you live in Paducah, youve seen Freddy dance at Kroger each year to raise money for the Easter Seals Telethon. He dances by himself or recruits shoppers. A sound system is set up playing Moon River or whatever. People donate for the couple of weeks he dances. (Kind of sounds like a scene from a quirky movie.) Kalkidan thought it was very amusing that he was out there dancing by himself. It was obvious that she thought he was loony and was laughing and looking at me, like I shared her sentiment or maybe I had an explanation. No, I cant really explain that yet. Maybe next year. She laughed a lot and out loud at the rehearsal of Oklahoma! we attended tonight. I was there to do emergency costume repairs for the first dress rehearsal, so I took Kalkidan. The two things that totally cracked her up were the fake fighting scenes (especially the girl fight) and the Dream Sequence. I have never thought of the Dream Sequence as hilarious, but it was to her. Its all in the perspective, I guess.
