Kamla Leads Challengers in “Unity” Contest When it comes to “to uniting all of Trinidad and Tobago”, more voters place confidence in Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar than in challengers Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley and or PNM Lady Vice Chair Penny Beckles. This one finding of an ongoing poll being conducted by the North American Caribbean Teachers Association (NACTA) over the last month on various issues. Rowley and Beckles are in a heated battle for leadership of the PNM and the poll is showing interesting views in that contest. NACTA has been gathering data from field surveys featuring a match up between the different political leaders on various issues and on popularity. The findings (obtained from interviews of a total of over one thousand voters comprising of 44 per cent Indians, 37 per cent Africans, 18 per cent mixed and one per cent others, reflecting the demographics of the population) reveal a very close contest between Kamla and either of her potential challengers for the post of P.M and in approval ratings. However, on the issue of “national unity”, Kamla beats her potential PNM challengers by a huge margin with PNM sympathizers divided between Rowley and Penny on who is better capable of uniting the country. Asking “which of the three leaders they feel can unite all of T&T”, Kamla gets the nod from 45% respondents, Rowley 28%, and Penny 16% with 11% not offering a response. The poll also asked if each of the three leaders could get much needed cross-cultural support to win a general election. Kamla and Penny each got the endorsement of over half the population with only 39% feeling Dr. Rowley can get cross cultural support (with 44% saying no and 17% unsure) to win a general election.
