Kandy cultural procession is a holly and grand pageant of Esala held in srilanka in end of July or August It has a few suggestions for arranging that grand festival of kandy cultural procession .it is an expresses of the respect dedication and belief of the local Buddhist to the lord Buddha tooth relic , gods and imitates rain .as that procession is exhibiting all the aspects of the rain such as thunder ,lighting ,rain clouds and rain drops. The wipe –crackers and fire ball acrobats clear the path and symbolize the sound of thunder and lightning that first elephant is carrying royal officer he brings his hand an ola-leaf book that records the duties of officers attached to the sacred temple. The in charge of the royal Elephant (Gajanayaka Nelame) carrying his hands a golden goad. The Elephants symbolize rain clouds that flags from the different regions of the kingdom are carried in the procession and presence of the king to show that they still belong to him it is seeing that commitment their subordinators There are Dancers and drummers who take pride in performing at this pageant at the king period for these musician were not paid in cash they were given land in return for their services. In 1815 the kandyan kingdom fell to the British the tooth relic was handed over to the Buddhist clergy as two chief monks Asgrya and Malwattha in kandy and they look after this Relic in annual rotation and takes part in the daily services conducted at the perfume chamber and the lay custodian of the tooth Relic is known as the Diyawadana Nilame in the absence of the king the lay custodian is considered the most popular Buddhist lay man in sri lanka .He walk just behind the tusker who carries the Relic and dressed in the traditional Royal costume of the king of kandy The lay custodians of the Davales walk in the Devala procession . The procession is begun with a simple ceremony new moon day of Esala the lay priests of devales at tha foot of the Jack tree cut and planted in premises of each of the four Devales ,Natha ,Vishnu, Katharagama,and goddess Pattini First five nights are having kumbal perahera .that procession also goes only around the Devales without much ceremony on the sixth night the kumbal perahera begins and continues on four five days .the Devala prahera assemble in front of the temple of toothNext five nights are called Randoli perahera “Doli’ is a palanquins of the Devales that carry the golden caskets and swords of the Devales Final night is a more colorful and most attractive night of the festival on that night the Relic is temporary deposited in the Gedige veharaya of the Asgiriya temple at about 3 am in the next morning the lay priests of Devala go in procession to the mahaveli gange at Gatabe . They get on to the boat to the middle of the river with golden sword and casket to refill while striking the water with the sword they come back after refilling up to Gatabe veharaya and connected to day perahera the day procession is held to mark the ceremony..
