Kanye has made the point that even in moving from irons chains to gold chains, in many ways, slavery is still very much slavery. “Free” becomes a much more nebulous concept when you start trying to actually apply its definition to your life. Everyone is bound because everyone is human, but we have moved past the point of allowing other individuals enslave us and have become “New Slaves” by enslaving ourselves. Basically, this album tells us that we are all slaves; to the money, to the girl, to the cultural figure (to Kanye himself), to some perceived measure of success, to religion, to the past… we could all go on. There is no such thing as “freedom,” but that in itself should liberate us. The question really isn’t if we break the chains, but if we even want to. Are you free?
