Karl Popper “I assert that children are structured – they come into this world structured, for a task. And that task is to adjust themselves to their environment. This is a very simple formulation. But it has not been brought into this discussion to my knowledge before, except by myself. Children are structured for life, so that they can adjust themselves to different environments. They therefore largely depend in their mind, and in their mental evolution, to a considerable extent on their environment. What we call education is influencing this environment in a way which we judge to be good for these children. We try to put children in schools because they can learn something there. What does learning really mean? It means influencing their environment so that they can adjust themselves for their future task – for their task as citizens, for the task of earning money, for their task as parents of a new generation and so on. So everything depends on the environment. But we are, as the older generation, responsible for offering them the best environmental conditions which we can offer them.” Karl Popper, After The Open Society.
