Karlovy Vary International Film Festival July 4 to July 12, 2014 Vyhledat Homepage KVIFF´s first winners are known July 12, 2014, 3:50 PM Winners of non-statutory awards (foto: Milan Malíček) While the critics asked by the Festival Daily selected Corn Island as the best film in the Main Competition, their colleagues from the journalist FIPRESCI Jury granted their award to Rocks in My Pockets. This animated film by Signe Baumane also won the Special Mention by the Ecumenical Jury. The Ecumenical Jury’s main award went to Corn Island. The best Main Competition film selected by Europa Cinemas Label was Free Fall. “I’m happy to have found someone who understands my film,” rejoiced György Pálfi over the result. The section East of the West was the focus of the journalist Fedeora Jury. Its award went to the Albanian Bota, and the special mention was granted to the Russian Corrections Class. We are invited to reflect the importance of harmony between man and nature and also to reflect the respect and take-care for the others. The film raises attention towards human creativity and the never ending cycle of life. SPECIAL MENTION Rocks in My Pockets / Rocks in My Pockets Directed by: Signe Baumane USA, Latvia, 2014 Rocks in My Pockets is an animated film telling a personal story of a woman, director and illustrator Signe Baumane, who courageously fights with her psychological illness. She tries to understand her uneasy personal situation and through artistic work she shows always fragile but possible balance of her everyday life. Tverdovsky Russia, Germany, 2014 FEDEORA JURY Sherif Awad, Egypt - journalist Natascha Drubek, Germany - journalist Kirsten Liese, Germany - journalist EUROPA CINEMAS LABEL AWARD Szabadesés / Free Fall Directed by: György Pálfi Hungary, France, South Korea, 2014 We are really delighted to award the Europa Cinemas Label to György Pálfi’s Free Fall. We especially appreciated its powerful visual style, its strong elements of grotesque, surreal and absurdity which draw a harsh criticism on the hypocrisy of modern society and reveal the deepest fears of human beings. Through seven different stories, all of them highly unexpected, Pálfi’s film pushes the limits of the viewer’s experience. Extravagant though innovative in its approach of film language, Györgi Pálfi makes the most of cinematographic elements. We consider it is highly important that, nowadays, theatres stand for this kind of films, for which a cinema screen is necessary. Free Fall is the promise of an unusual collective experience and may arouse contradictory emotions and valuable debates.
