Karma is a wonderful thing.... Once again, mother nature and the horrible weather have lead to a tough start. The month of June saw only huge fish, difficult at best to land on light gear in ideal conditions, but with poor winds and sea states, to have hooked 6 monsters and landed one to this point although not what was anticipated, pretty decent by measuring the rest of the fleets success. There were some decent reports of bluefin, mostly smaller models but a few large mixed in south of the MA/RI coastline down near the canyons and the shipping lanes. With that predominantly being a troll fishery, and a very long run with peanut sized fish, we opted to tay near shore and try for the big ones, as most of my June clients come for one thing and one thing only...trophy bluefin. Heres where the karma kicks in....the group originally scheduled for 4 days fishing starting Saturday just about a week ago cancelled their trip as they were not happy with the results so far this season aboard the Dusky. Regular CCS sniper Mike Leonard and the Brooklyn crew had nasty fog and winds several times this season, and Friday were forced to play with the stripers on ultra light gear. Given the vacancy left by the cancellation, they jumped at the opportunity to get out with the quick window presented to run south. We got a bit of intel from Capt. Alan from Got Stryper Baits, passed on to him from an island resident that plays in those waters very difficult to get to from the mainland. With a general area to start from, even with the fog we had through 10 am we were able to move a few miles in a search pattern and discovered some amazing life. We had an Orca chasing dolphin and bluefin airing out several times near the boat, a first for this captain. Two different makos free jumping, seals, herds of dolphin, whales, and a surreal backdrop with the constant patchy fog we were dealing with. Caught one bluefish early on that gave a bit of excitement, then nothing until the fog lifted around mid morning. We discovered a dead whale floating that had a few large bite marks out of it, and stayed on scene for a bit hoping to see the animal that had left the tooth holes, but instead started seeing small blow ups at the surface sporadically and randomly in the distance....bluefin on top!! Several opportunities led to 4 solid hook ups. Each member of the 3 man crew and the captain all fed an artificial lure to a bluefin in the course of the next 3 hours. One fish came unbuttoned after a 5 minute fight when it simply shook its head and spit the hooks. Samanthas fish ate a RonZ and sliced through the leader after a brief but spectacular surface show right near the boat. 2 others paid dearly for their mistakes with a 52 fish for Mike and a 79 fish for the captain. The fish hammered the Strategic Angler Custom Lures LLC frantic that George Jones left onboard the Dusky, and got both hooks in opposite sides of the mouth. Very easy fight as the fish couldnt close its mouth to breathe and was boat side with very little fuss in extremely short time. Gotta love being lucky when it comes to those big girls! The big fish was taken as the trophy for the season for CCS, estimated around 260 pounds, along with the delicious smaller cousin all of which will be consumed with gusto and glee by the villagers back in Brooklyn, and at the captains house as well! The whale was visited by Capt. Larry and Matt Rissell from On the Water Magazine shortly after we left it, and got some serious footage as the White pointer that came to feast had its head all the way out of the water while it dined on the poor deceased mammal. Over all an amazing day on the water with some really exotic visitors alongside the Dusky, plenty of sushi, and endless good times. Hopefully the crew that missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime gets back on the good side of the Karma bank and learns that it aint called catching, its called fishing!
