Karsyn has had a good day! She has slept most the day because they are still trying to figure out her medicine and keep her from withdrawing. She wakes easily though but just wants to sleep. She is working with physical and occupational therapists to get stronger and participates appropriately. The ventilator mode (pressure control) they switched Karsyn to Thursday morning seems to be working very well. They were able to start weaning on the settings today. They are going slowly, making a small change every 12 hours and checking blood gases shortly after each wean. Today when her blood gases came back this afternoon, her CO2 level was in the low 70s. While this is not ideal for just a regular patient (35-45), Karsyn has been in the mid to high 80s which is what we thought was going to be her baseline. This made a lot of the doctors and nurses super excited. Slow and steady, slow and steady! We are still hoping to avoid the trach but will not know more until going into next week and what Karsyn does between now and the next discussion.
