Karvachauth today - an ancient Vedic custom to keep a day long fast for the health and longevity of the husband! A ritual to strengthen the marriage bond. Why fast? Why the woman? This day is actually a good day to fast by both man and woman. Men being the breadearners (material enrichment for the family was their forte) in yonder years left spiritual enrichment to the women ! Just like Valentines day. ancient Vedic culture celebrated the union of man and woman spiritually each year. They went beyond giving and receiveing chocs and roses. They got us to retreat from the world for a day. Take a break from house and kitchen chores. Focus your energy internally to reflect on your marriage. To undo your mistakes. To seek forgiveness and forgive. To express gratitude to each other. To remind each other of the spirit of sacrifice inherent in any good relationship, symbolised by the sacrifice of food for a day for each other. The women dresses up today like a bride, shares the ritual with other women, shows her respect and gratitude to her mother-in-law for the gift of her son. At the end of the day, she will draw the Yin feminine energy from the Moon and surrender all to her husband, reminding him through this act of surrender that he is to protect and love her, that she is his responsibility till death do us part! This is indeed a good time to take time out, fast together, reflect on and renew the marriage! Make this a day to share, to ask for forgiveness and to forgive, to express gratitude. A strong and happy marriage is what adds years to the lives of the couple involved! Or so I figure.:)
