Kashmir Inc concerned over ‘beggary menace’ Mafia at work: KCCI GK NEWS NETWORK Srinagar, July 21: Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) has expressed serious concern over the “beggary menace” in Srinagar saying it was bringing disrepute for this famed City, particularly on the tourism front. The KCCI President Abdul Hamid Punjabi, in a statement said: “This menace has gone alarming over the years amid uncontrolled inflow of non-local beggars.” “This big number of beggars equally brings disrepute for the tourism sector as tourists feel pestered,” the KCCI statement added. “From marketplaces to traffic signals to tourist spots, one comes across plenty of them everywhere,” the Chamber people added. They said the KCCI has picked up the issue with the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Shailendra Kumar and the District Development Commissioner (DDC) Er Farooq Ahmed Shah. A KCCI delegation led by Punjabi and other members including Senior Vice-President Sheikh Ashiq appealed the DDC to look seriously into the matter. “If the menace of beggary is not checked for now, it may turn into an uncontrollable problem in the coming years and put natives to trouble of sorts,” Ashiq said. The KCCI fears that some “mafia was behind the beggary menace.” “We feel it’s some mafia promoting beggary as a professional industry. They adhere to a proper modus operandi in running their show,” Ashiq said. The KCCI however clarified that: “We are not against begging but it should be industrialized.” “There are many needy people who need to be taken care of by all of us but the way beggary is taking place in Srinagar is alarming,” the KCCI said. Pertinently while the government has miserably failed to check the inflow of non- local beggars into Srinagar legal experts have been saying that begging has been banned at public places.
