Kashmiris observe India’s Independence Day as Black Day Indian troops martyr one more Kashmiri youth in Kupwara Srinagar, August 15 (KMS): Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over observed the India’s Independence Day, today, as Black Day to convey the message to the international community that India has usurped the Kashmiris’ inalienable right to self-determination. The day was marked by complete shutdown in occupied Kashmir, call for which had been given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani, the JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, and other pro-liberation leaders. The occupation authorities had imposed stringent restrictions in Srinagar and other towns to prevent people from holding anti-India demonstrations. A large number of Indian troops and police personnel patrolled the deserted roads and streets across the territory. Tight security measures were taken around Bakhshi Stadium, the main venue of the 15th August celebrations. CCTV cameras were used to keep an eye on the movement of people while sharpshooters were positioned atop buildings surrounding the venue and vital installations in Srinagar. Barricades were erected at many places across the city, and roads leading to the stadium in a radius of one kilometer were sealed. Mobile telephone service across the Kashmir Valley was suspended. Despite heavy presence of troops and police, people staged anti-India protest in Bandipora. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in a memorandum mailed to the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, appealed him to make positive efforts towards resolution of the Kashmir dispute. He said that the occupied territory had been converted into a garrison and the inhabitants were managed through prolonged curfews and coercive military measures. The APHC-AJK chapter held a sit-in outside the United Nations Observers’ Office in Islamabad, today, to observe the Indian Independence Day as Black Day. The participants including the AJK Prime Minister, Chaudhry Abdul Majeed and Syed Yousuf Naseem expressed serious concern over the stepped-up Indian state terrorism in occupied Kashmir. They also handed over a memorandum to the UN Office on the occasion, calling upon Ban Ki-Moon to take practical steps to redeem the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination. Hurriyet leaders took out a big anti-India rally from press club to the UN Office in Muzaffarabad. Addressing the rally, Ghulam Muhammad Safi and other speakers said that the Kashmir dispute had international dimensions and India was the main impediment in way of its permanent resolution. On the other hand, Indian troops, in their fresh act of state terrorism, martyred one more Kashmiri youth in Keran area of Kupwara. The authorities booked the illegally detained Democratic Freedom Party’s Doda Zonal President, Maulana Abdul Qayoom, under black law, Public Safety Act.
