Katie Weimer posted: I am a surgical technology student soon to be assigned a clinical site. I have fared well in all of my classes but I am concerned that I have had no experience in an actual, live OR setting. My class and I were to be going to our local hospital once a week for the entirety of our second semester, as per our course manual. This never happened and we were not given any explanation. I brought my concerns to the administration at my school and was told that although having this experience would have been optimal, my training in lab should adequately prepare me for clinicals. Is this common place with tech schools? Does lab experience truly equate to a live OR? I feel like I’ve been given a complete disadvantage! Is there anything I can do to better prepare myself? I’ve been in touch with students who have gone to clinicals before me and they say that their preceptors are amazed that the students don’t have this experience.
