Kaviar Gallery is open today from 11-4pm! Currently on view in the Abstract in Kentucky exhibition is Lorie Shorts Hard Water. This piece was also featured in the Courier Journal. Artist Statement: I have always wanted to be an artist. I was the ‘art kid’ in school and went on to study art at Western Kentucky University for one year before starting my family. I then put life and family before my dream of being an artist. In 2004 I was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. This was a defining moment for me. Upon believing my death to be eminent, my greatest regret was that I had not followed my dream of becoming an artist. God answered my prayers to live and I now follow my dreams by painting things that I love, find beautiful, or that intrigue me. All things in MY experience that make me stop to take note or cause me to wonder. I look with my heart and soul, as well as my eyes, for the moment it feels as if a tuning fork vibrates in my soul. At this time in my life, art is as necessary as breathing and is a spiritual thing with me even though I do not paint religious subject matter. It is about that moment when one recognizes the impact and value of something on the soul. All my life, I have been an avid admirer of Kentucky wildflowers and the beautiful places they grow. Both star as wonderful subject matter in many of my works and are usually rendered in acrylic. My love of, and desire to protect, the beautiful places that these grow in lead me to start recycling “stuff” into works of art. These designs are often abstract as they are the product of experimentation and whimsy. They are some of my favorite pieces because they are pure, intuitive creations, and they keep “stuff” out of our landfills and waterways. - Lorie Short
