Kazakhstan: Appointment of relative to public role confirms presidents intention to closely manage eventual succession The city administration of the capital Astana on 19 December announced that it had appointed Nurali Aliyev as deputy mayor. Aliyev, a wealthy businessman, is the son of Dariga Nazarbayeva, eldest daughter of President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Aliyev’s appointment is unlikely to indicate that Nazarbayev regards him as his direct successor, but nevertheless reflects a desire on Nazarbayev’s part to ensure the presence of loyal figures in influential roles. We continue to believe that, assuming that he remains in good health, Nazarbayev intends to contest the next presidential election, due to be held in 2016.
