Keeping it Local If you have been following my facebook posts, you will notice a series of shop local messages. I used to be kind of shy about my buy local posts because I didnt want to guilt anyone, or put a blatantly self interested message out there again and again. It has come to my attention through the tilt process that maybe we dont fully understand how important it is to shop local. How shopping local gives us control over so much in our lives, from what our house is worth to what kind of job opportunities are available to us and what kind of schools our kids have the opportunity to attend. The choices we make about where we spend our money create the world we raise our children in. Shopping local is not just about keeping your cute local storefronts open (though having a thriving main street is vital to your property values). Shopping local is about keeping all of us strong and economically thriving. Shopping local means that local lawyers, hairdressers, teachers, firemen, and librarians get paid. Local accountants, house painters, electricians, janitorial services, plumbers, and mechanics are hired by local businesses. Not by Wal-Mart or Amazon. We are piling money on rafts and sending it out of town, and that just doesnt make sense. Its like cutting a major artery and not doing anything to stop the bleed out. I know I am preaching to the choir, but if there is someway you can improve your habits even a little bit, or if there is one person you can teach, please understand. It matters. You matter. There are two reasons to shop big box and Amazon. Price and selection. There are literally thousands of reasons to shop local. (And if shopping were done locally, better price and selection would follow suit.) We know its hard. Although it is glorified and glamorous, we shop-keeps and restauranteurs in small town USA have really tight budgets just like you do. Seriously. Check out our cars. Ask us about our retirement plans. We are here because we *love* the heck out of this community and we *love* the parts we get to play, but we know all about tough money choices. I preach because I love you. My community. I want us all to have the most opportunity for good things. That means we have to keep the good things we have in our community. Shop local. It pays dividends.
