Key Members of Congress Show Solidarity with Israel: AIPAC commends key members of Congress for showing their strong solidarity with Israel’s struggle against Hamas terrorism at today’s National Leadership Assembly, which was sponsored by the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations. The Washington, D.C. event was held at a time when Israel is defending its people against unprovoked aggression by Hamas. The terrorist group has launched over two-thousand rockets against Israel’s civilian population and constructed a terror tunnel network to attack the Jewish state. The bipartisan delegation of members of Congress who attended the gathering included Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), incoming Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD), Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Ed Royce (R-CA), Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel (D-NY). In remarks to the assembly, AIPAC President Robert A. Cohen emphasized the importance of U.S. coordination with Israel during this crisis, and the dismantlement of Hamas’ terrorist infrastructure in order to ensure a lasting peace. “At this sensitive and dangerous moment,” he said, “it is essential that the United States works closely with our democratic and indispensable ally, Israel, to ensure Jerusalem is able to keep its citizens safe from terror. As a first step in any agreement, Hamas must stop its relentless terror attacks. The Iranian-backed group must be prevented from carrying out further attacks, both via rocket and tunnel. As Deputy National Security Advisor Tony Blinken said last week, we must seek the demilitarization of Gaza. Disarming terror groups like Hamas is critical for lasting peace and stability.” “Let us be very clear,” he added. “There can be no true peace until Hamas is disarmed.”
