Khao Lak Beach and Similan Islands, Thailand Khao Lak Beach is a peaceful place that holds the memory for many of a natural disaster, the 2004 Tsunami that was televised worldwide. The beach now holds a rocky outcrop to the north that only sprouted after the deadly force of the wave returned to its usual calm self. Visitors from around the world stroll along the tidal beach at low tide, looking out over the calm water stretching far to the western horizon where some amazing sunsets can be seen, or they swim and play in the warm Andaman Sea Along the beachfront we are met by the Resorts and Villas of the rebuilt hotels that were destroyed on 26th December, 2004. The Resort at the end of the beachfront Soi [road] is the Apsara Beachfront Resort and Villas, of which comprises of 195 guest rooms and 60 villas ‘either pool or garden villas’, in a nicely kept landscaped layout. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the food and beverage is worldly, catering for their international guests. Khao Lak district is complimented by a variety of activities for all ages, whether it is visiting the local Farms, Waterfalls, Wats (temples), or being more adventurous by trekking through the hills, rafting down the rivers, riding Elephants or riding an AVT through a ‘nature trail’. The fun and excitement doesn’t only stay on land as the warm sea and distant Islands call out to be explored. Similan Islands are a group of nine Islands that can be reached by a speedboat in approximately one hour ten minutes from Khao Lak Beach. The trip is not recommended for those with back or neck problems as the calm beachfront waters can turn bumpy as the boats reach the bigger swells of the open ocean. Having time to reach the Islands allows the group to get to know each other. The crew and guides from the local ‘Rak Talay Travel. Co Ltd are attentive to their customer’s needs and will even help those less experienced swimmers when they reach the Islands to go snorkelling. With three Island stops on their full day excursion, you have the opportunity to spot ‘Nemo, Dory or maybe a sea-turtle’ along with other sea-life. Having a break ashore at one of the ‘protected Island’ beaches, your boat crew provide food and drink as you dry out in the sun, tour the Island or take another swim. There is even the opportunity to stay a night or two as you can rent a tent on the main Similan Island. The protection of these Islands is watched over by the Royal Navy and Government, and there are signs displaying the heavy fines for those not obeying the local rules and laws. The scenery and sea-life are spectacular and you don’t want to leave as your guide rounds everyone up before the weather changes and the sea gets rough. Reaching the mainland again you have the opportunity to purchase a DVD of the local area and of your own trip, displaying both still and movie footage. Getting away from your busy life or other bustling tourist spots, Khao Lak offers a more peaceful holiday suitable for all from singles, families, and wedding groups to business conference groups, so for your next get-away, think ‘Khao Lak, Thailand’.
