Kalei continues to research and build understanding of the significance of site placement and use within the historical corridor of Kahaluu, Kona and is also active in applying her research in a Forest Resource Cultural use plan for Kaho’olawe, the island previously used as a bombing range by the US military. Kalei also works with Kamehameha Schools, Keauhou-Kahaluu Education Group, community groups, & cultural practitioners. Kaulana Mahina – The Hawaiian Lunar Calendar Recently, there has been a surge of interest to restore traditional Hawaiian time keeping practices, which is proving to be an excellent methodology for resource management and conservation. The Kaulana Mahina is based on the lunation of the moon and on the practices established by generations of observations, trial and error and adaptation of methodologies to efficiently capitalize on the natural cycles occurring in our surrounding environment. Over time, the Kaulana Mahina dictated ceremonies, rituals, political decisions and birth omens as well. This presentation will attempt to provide a foundational knowledge base of the Kaulana Mahina. maramataka2014.co.nz/
