Kia Toa RFC weekly update. 6 May 2014 Big Barrel Senior A vs Feilding Old Boys Oroua, Our last match of the first round was against Feilding Old Boys Oroua (The Stags), played at Kimbolton. Conditions on the “High Veld” were perfect, with three matches being played. A women’s curtain raiser, followed by a Pressies encounter on the #2 field to compliment the main Senior A fixture. Several Kia Toa front line players were rested given they were carrying niggling injuries. So the squad was somewhat being tested to gain the maximum five competition points against the lowly ranked Stags. A solid platform was laid at half time with a 17 : 0 score line, however the second half lost its structure a little bit and there was frustration with some of the refereeing calls. Despite this the final whistle saw a comfortable 46 : 12 win. Six tries, all but one converted by Jade Te Rure, who also kicked a further two penalties. Try scorers were Toetu Mapuilesua, Bethel Fauolo, Gus Taylor, Maleli Sua, Nathan Tudreu & Bruce Folau. Solid game in the forwards by Kenny Wihongi, who was playing out of position at lock, while Tevita Taufu’i again ensured the backline maintain its composure in the mid field. Unfortunately lock Kingsley Teppett suffered a bad ankle injury early in the second half. While it is not a fracture he will be unavailable for at least a couple of weeks and will be missed. Next week sees Kias with the bye, so this provides a chance for all players to get themselves right before the all important second round starts. As Coach Fusi Feaunati notes, to date we have still to play to our full potential and opposition sides may feel they have our measure. The challenge therefore is to lift our performance to be real contenders to retain the Hankins Shield at the business end of the season. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day Kia Toa Senior 2nd vs Fielding Yellows. HT Score 17 all. FT Score Fielding Yellows 27 vs Kia Toa 25 This was a hard fought game where both teams showed they are definite semi- final prospects. Kia Toa played their most solid performance of the year and it was unfortunate that in the end we missed out to a late penalty by Feilding that gave them the game 27 vs 25. We just need to iron out the few silly mistakes and have a little more patience and we should be in for a good year. We have a big squad this year and it is appreciated that those on the bench didn’t get on until later in the game on Saturday but Doc Strawbridge is keen to get everyone involved as the year progresses. A good team spirit and culture is developing under Doc and his assistants Cedric Bowen and Eugene Hekenui (while he off through injury). The team do appreciate Doc’s input and commitment. All players gave their all and it was hard to allocate the 3, 2, 1s. Good to see Warwick Price back in action, his experience and leadership is already evident and as soon as he gets some more game time we are looking for big things from Warwick and that it rubs off on the team. Although Steven George had his kicking boots on amassing 15 points the points went as follows: 3 points to ½ back M Ledua (apologies if spelling wrong), 2 points to Manifo Malu at centre and 1 point to Sione Tupou (McCaw) who this year has been drafted into prop. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-M Ledua, 2 –Manifo Malu 1 Sione Tupou Presidents vs Halcombe Again we had great player numbers. Halcombe were going through a training session before our rugby gear made it to the grounds and it was obvious they weren’t here to play tiddly winks. It was a hard fought battle with Halcombe scoring first and unable to convert and that sadly for them that was their final score. We scored four tries with Craig converting them all. Creating a final score of 28 points to five. The score was not reflective of the game as Halcombe held us back on a number of occasions and it was a good tussle. This is our third win from three games an amazing feat compared to previous years. May it continue, touch wood. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the day 3-Craig, 2 –Bull, 1-Tamati
