~Kia Walden, CEO- Plantation Key Health & Rehabilitation Center, 48 High Point Rd, Tavernier, Fl 33070. Email: ceo@plantationkeync, Phone: 305-853-0799~ My grandmother was in a nursing home when I was younger. I thought then, we can do better than this. Everyone in here is someones loved one or least was someones loved one. The experience shaped my life and brought me where I am today. We have around 50 residents most of the time. We are fortunate to live in a community where many of them have great local friend and family support. However, we have 15 residents right now that seldom if ever have visitors. Some of those who dont receive visitors have valid hurdles to overcome. For instance, the wife or husband may be in our center and the other spouse may live in Key West or Homestead and they cant drive. Itd be great if we could have community support for transportation for these type situations. Some of them simply dont have any involved family. You can visit our center 8 am - 6 pm daily Monday-Friday and ask for me and I will direct you to those who have no visitors. You can also come on weekends but just check with us about planned events on the weekends. And, please feel free to bring children and pets. Our residents love to see and interact with children and pets. On the pet thing, you just must bring their shot records. And, of course, please dont visit when you have colds and things as our residents are prone to infection. One thing our seniors would truly love is the opportunity to go out for picnics or just to ride and around and see the water that most of them grew up loving and now dont get to see. If you have vans or church buses or things like that, they could go to Founders Park for instance and just sit by the water. It would be such a treat. They love cooking classes and we have the facilities if any of you chefs and cooks out there would like to come and do that. Youd have a great time and theyd talk about it for weeks. Artists that could come and bring supplies and teach simple art classes would also be a big hit. Many of you might have other great ideas and wed love to hear them. One of our long range big goals is to have a van to take our residents on field trips out in the community. We hear from them all the time, We just wish we could get out some and see the world outside these walls. If you are reading this and you do not live in the Upper Keys, I would encourage you to contact the centers near you and see what you can do. You will receive more from doing this than you can ever imagine. I so look forward to meeting many of you and we will all appreciate everything or anything you can bring to our residents. This generation of Americans is one of our greatest treasures. They have stories to tell that your children may not hear anywhere else. Our residents have so much to offer. Many of them have lived here a very long time and have such great stories to share with you. We hope you engage with them and talk with them and listen to them. You have the power to give them a voice. Many of them feel they have lost their voice and value. ******PLEASE********see our Halloween flyer attached and take a few minutes to bring your trick or treaters to the Center. All of our residents will be giving out candy and we have a costume contests and other fun things. Nothing would bring more joy to our residents than this. We are very excited about HOK coming here on Tuesdays to interview our residents and tell their stories on this page. We are starting this next Tuesday. There is a lot of love waiting in the halls and rooms here, please come see us.
