Kia ora koutou!!!! Just received word that our own Lara Andrews has been honoured the White Sox Captaincy role for the Womens World Softball Championships being held in Haarlem, Netherlands in August. A huge congratulations to Lara for the hard work and dedication to the game she loves. Loads of aroha going your way Lara from your TA whanau !!!!! Article as follows: Subject: Leader In Sport Given Captaincy Role A leader in women’s softball has been bestowed the honor of captaincy for the White Sox team in their campaign at the Women’s World Softball Championships in Haarlem, The Netherlands, 15-26 August. Lara Andrews who originally hails from Hutt Valley and is the first Kiwi woman to play in the American Pro Fastpitch League says softball is her life and is over the moon with being awarded the captaincy role by team coach Naomi Shaw. “The opportunity to play with my country on my heart is a blessing in many ways, but most of all, a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment to this sport. ‘Softball is my key to the world’ and has shaped me to be the individual I have become today,” say Andrews, 24 who plays for the Pennsylvania Rebellion after earlier graduating from University of Delaware with Bachelors Of Science in Human Services and Family studies, with a concentration in programs for children . Its an incredible feeling to have my team and management believe in my abilities to lead this team at the next world champs. I believe nothing will change in the way I play and lead. I have grown so much since Ive been in America playing ball (five years) and the knowledge and experience gained over here has really opened my eyes to the quality and higher level of softball in the US. I am now at the age where I am becoming more of an older player on our team and its really important that we continue to share knowledge and gain experience for the future of our New Zealand family.” Coach Shaw says that Andrews has the right attributes to be a very good captain for New Zealand and be the type of leader others can follow in what will be a tough tournament. “Lara has been a key component of many junior and national White Sox campaigns at ISF World Championship standard. She brings with her vast experience of international play which is complemented with her current involvement in the US Pro Softball League. She is an exceptional person who will lead by example and walk the talk. Those who know her well, will agree that she is inspirational, motivational, empathetic, encouraging and has the best interests of the team and its players in mind,” explains Shaw. Andrews says the world champs has become stronger all of the time with more teams being competitive. “Definitely Japan and US are the strongest. Aussie is always competitive as well. At the world champs, any team can beat any team on any day! Thats the mentality that we need to take into this world champs!” says the third base player who can also fit into a team at outfield and catcher.
