Kiarie Kamere has withdrawn his candidature from the Gatundu Parliamentary election on Friday. Kamere was vying for the seat on a New Party ticket which is part of the Jubilee coalition against TNA’s Moses Kuria for the seat which fell vacant following the death of Joseph Ngugi of a heart-attack in May. He formally stepped down from the race that is only seven days away in a letter handed to the IEBC on citing wrangles during the nomination and campaign process. In the letter Kamere said, “What happened during the TNA nominations were held on June 23,2014 is in the public domain...Political contests can be acrimonious and can cause huge rifts and polarization in the community. Gatundu South is the home of our beloved President Uhuru Kenyatta. I do not wish to be the cause, or be associated with unnecessary tensions in the President’s backyard” “It is with this in mind and for respect for our President that I this morning announce my decision to withdraw my candidature from the race for the Gatundu South Parliamentary seat.” Kamere acknowledged that although his supporters will be deeply disappointed and let down it is best to consider the “bigger picture” and the good of the citizens. He further assured constituents of Gatundu South although he will not be Parliament he will continue to work for them through other initiatives. Aside from Moses Kuria, Kamere’s withdrawal leaves Boniface Njoroge of Kenya National Congress to vie in the by-election.
