Kids in my Street An explanation of the youth of Lockhart Street, Ward Street and some other ring ins, Whyalla circa 1954-60 No matter what, I think that we are all a product of our environment and one significant factor in that environment are the kids in your neighbourhood – those people in your peer group that you interact with perhaps almost on a daily basis and with whom you grow up with. My experience is that the further those kids live from your back door then the less you will mix with them and the impact they have on your environment is more limited. This means that because I lived in the middle of my street, I had less to do with kids at either end of the street. This changes as you get older and venture further afield and make friends at school that don’t even live in your neighbourhood. In Whyalla we had “back lanes” – service lanes for rubbish collection and the infamous “Night Cart” and of course great places to kick the footy and play cricket. The lanes also facilitated interaction with the kids from the next street who were essentially next door out the back gate. Therefore exponential growth in the size of the mix and I think a richer environment. In my case Lockhart street was extended by the Back Lane to include some of the kids from Ward street. My lot were a pretty good bunch and we all got on well. In fact I do not remember one fight or serious falling out over all of my growing up. That may be to do with the fact that all of this happened over 50 years ago so I plead brain fade if anybody differs.
