Kihon waza (basic techniques) is indispensable to Shotokan karate. For your body to generate one punch knockout power and to move smoothly, mastery of the basics is a must. In any legitimate Japanese martial art there are absolutely no shortcuts. Even in Japan the best practitioners practice the basics thousands of times upon thousands. It is largely why their karate is virtually second to none. Those who devote the time to basics now will certainly bypass those who dont in the long run in terms of fighting ability and longevity in fitness and martial arts. Good start boys.
