Killara Bingles vs. Spit Junction Dreggs Barra Brui Oval, 26 - TopicsExpress

Killara Bingles vs. Spit Junction Dreggs Barra Brui Oval, 26 January 2015 Barra Brui Oval in St Ives was the setting for a clash between second and third on the table as the mighty Bingles took on the much hyped Dreggs. The Bingles were 0-2 in their games against the Dreggs this year, but there was a feeling amongst the group that today would see that trend reversed with a strong and confident Bingles side ready to get stuck in. The Bingles lost the toss this week but the Dreggs opted to send the Bingles into the field first in what is seemingly becoming a weekly formality. Jack Roach and Ed Philp were tossed the fresh rock to open the bowling, with Roach bowling a maiden in the first over to set the scene for what would be a great day for him. Roach finished the day with economic figures of 6 overs for 17 runs, with a wicket and a maiden, as well as a catch in the field. The Bingler is keen to mention JR’s dropped catch, but will refrain from doing so. Ed Philp also bowled economically, bowling 5 overs for 18 runs, also taking a wicket. Captain Nick Pluss and Damien Strouthos were next into the attack, with the skipper picking up his usual haul of wickets, bowling 6 overs for 37 runs with 3 wickets and 2 maidens. Strouthos also grabbed a wicket, and was unlucky not to have more, finishing with figures of 4 overs for 16 runs. The story of the day though was undoubtedly Sam ‘Shendo’ Henderson’s day with the ball in hand, leading the team in overs bowled with 7. Shendo was thrown the ball by the skipper as a change of pace option when the wickets were drying up, and boy did he deliver. He finished with figures of 7 overs for 28 runs and two wickets, and the ‘skyscraper’ has certainly earned himself an increased role going forward. Dave Roberts completed the all round team bowling effort with a wicket of his own. The Dreggs were all out for 156, a tough but gettable target for a Bingles side brimming with confidence. With a few early wickets falling, Captain Pluss, coming in at first drop, steadied the ship with a knock of 33, ably supported by Sam McKenzie who scored 14. There is talk on social media that Pluss will be replacing Shane Watson at 3. The ‘Cliff Rule’ at Barra Brui oval, which disallows sixes over the cliff side boundary, cost Nick Pluss one six, whilst Fraser Engelen couldn’t help himself middling two sixes over the one boundary in the same over, thug life. The wickets continued to fall until Jack Philp finally delivered on his self appointed title of ‘inform wicket keepers batsman’, scoring 24 runs, as murmurs of an unlikely Bingles victory began to stir among the strong crowd of 3 people. Philp knocked up a big partnership with Jack Roach, who top scored with 39 runs, in an innings that we will not hear the end of for years to come. Apologies in advance go to JR’s future children who will have to cop this story over and over as they grow up. Roach hit some big sixes and also played a reverse sweep in an able display of what this guy is capable of when he doesn’t turn up on Saturdays still drunk. Ed Philp turned in a James Faulker type effort down the stretch, earning himself the nickname of ‘the closer’ as he steered the ship home, finishing 17 not out with a few big boundaries of his own. Dave Roberts came in at 11, cool as a cucumber with all the pressure in the world, hitting the winning runs off a 4 in the final over. It was a win for the ages as the third place Bingles toppled the second placed Dreggs, sending a message to the league that the team is peaking (not that kind of peaking Shendo) at the business end of the season, and a finals run is imminent. A great day of cricket with a great bunch of blokes. Happy Australia Day Bingles fans! There’s nothing more Australian than cricket, and the Bingles are all about the 4 B’s this Australia Day; Birds, Beer, Banter and Boundaries. Yours in middling banter, The Bingler
