(Kim) There is a lot of information on the internet about cataracts in dogs. The cataract thickens and hardens over time, so if you ever have a dog that needs cataract surgery, the earlier it is done, the easier it is to remove, the fewer the complications and discomfort to the dog, and the more successful the surgery will be. Dog eyes are different from human eyes, and the lenses are much thicker. The procedure is a little different from that of humans, and lasers are not a good option because of the lens thickness. Penny has a cataract developing on her left eye, but it is not yet ruining her vision. Each eye can change at a different rate, so we will have one eye treated now, and wait a little while on the other eye. Dr. Brightman will see Penny regularly and will determine if, and when, to do surgery on her second eye.
