Kind of a lump it together warning post. Links regarding will be at the bottom. Sorry it is long. A) There have been several confirmed cases of Parvo in Belleville again. This happens every year. Please keep your pets up to date on their vaccinations. It is not a guarantee they wont get it, but it sure helps. Puppies especially are susceptible, and UNvaccinated dogs. They do NOT have to come into contact with an affected dog. You can bring it home on your shoes. Coyotes carry it, so they can pass through your yard or where you are walking your dog. Etc. B) Same goes for distemper (canine and feline. Racoons carry it. There have been cases in the area. Safest thing is prevention! If you spot a raccoon that is acting sick, call the MNR. They also carry roundworm otherwise known as racoons disease in dogs. Animal Control does not pick up live wildlife. You can contact the Animal Control in your area for more details if you find wildlife deceased on your property as it could be an MNR matter. C) Coyotes. Dont think they just live in the wild if you dont see them in your city. They are all over and in cities/towns. I have been asked to post since people have seen them snatching cats in the Madoc area this week, and they have always hunted in our bigger cities, you just may never see one. ****Was just reported to me that two Chihuahuas were attacked and carried off IN Madoc by coyotes. Owners witnessed both as they were out with their dogs (not leashed so could not get to them in time.**** Typically curious but wary of humans. When hungry and other prey is not available will hunt cats and small dogs left unattended. Most dog attack reports occur in the winter, but please be aware. Dont be too hard on them, they are only surviving in an area that was theirs before we got here. And without them we would definitely be overrun with vermin as that is their first choice. They are good pest control. Keep your cats in and your small dogs watched, and should have no issues. During mating season they will also mate with unfixed dogs. Have been known to attack larger dogs, but typically only if starving during a hard winter. They carry Parvovirus which can make dogs extremely ill/cause death. D) Fishers - see link below if you have never seen one. I posted a while ago about them. They are in most areas now through central/southern Canada, and do not discriminate between prey. They will kill pretty much anything within relative reason to their size (or larger). If you see one, be wary. Rarely attack humans but there are some recorded cases. MNR is being a pain about them regarding trapping as they say it is not open season on them. If you encounter one/see one attacking or carrying off a pet or threatening a human, report to the MNR and hope they will respond. Fishers are NOT to be messed with, they are not wary of humans like our vermin controlling friends the coyotes. People have reported recently that a lot of cats they would typically see wandering (feral or otherwise), have disappeared in Belleville (not picked up by Animal Control). Hopefully some of them were just indoor/outdoor cats that owners have decided to keep in. This is not a lecture, it is your choice (well except there IS a leash bylaw for cats as well, they are not supposed to roam) if you let your cat out. But for their own protection, its just not safe anymore.
