Kiran Kumar Reddy to drum up ryots support against bifurcation... HYDERABAD: As part of his plan to whip up sentiments against the division of the state in the Seemandhra region, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is planning to address a huge public meeting in Vijayawada. To be held in the first half of November, the meeting will see Kiran place before the people of coastal Andhra, especially farmers, all water related issues he has been raising and seek their support for him in his efforts to stall the proposed division. Even though the programme is meant to inaugurate the much-awaited Pulichintala irrigation project, the chief minister, who is giving indications of his desire to float his own political party, is expected to give a clarion call to the farmers to oppose the division of the state, saying it would affect all the projects being built to tap unallocated surplus water. According to sources, Kiran is of the view that there is no better occasion than the inauguration of the Pulichintala project to make the farmers understand the negative impact of the state division. In the meeting, he would be projected as the lone champion of united state (Samaikyandra Simham). A huge publicity blitzkrieg is being launched for the purpose. with the help of local MP Lagadapati Rajagopal. Seemandhra ministers like K Partha Sarathi, Kanna Lakshminarayana, M Mahidhar Reddy, M Varaprasad, Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy, Vatti Vasanta Kumar and several MLAs and MPs have been already told to ensure a big mobilization of farmers for the meeting, the sources said. This will be the first public meeting to be addressed by Kiran since the July 30 decision of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to bifurcate the state. Even though the CM has been writing letters to the Prime Minister and the President and addressing press conferences, he has so far not addressed the public on the perils of the division of the state. All his previous attempts at holding a public meeting did not take off. The CM wanted to inaugurate the project on August 15 but floods dampened the plan. Later on, the inauguration of a flyover in Visakhapatnam was also put off due to technical reasons. After that, a meeting was fixed for October 30 to coincide with the Pulichintala inauguration but again, the sudden rains came in the way. Now, it has been decided to inaugurate the Pulichintala project in the second week of November, before November 15, at any cost, a minister said. involved in the arrangements told TOI. Kiran has been opposing the division on the grounds that it would lead to serious water problems in the Seemandhra region. In his famous press conference on September 28, he feared water wars if the division was thrust on the people. Important projects such as Srisailam, Nagarajunasagar and Pulichintala would face problems as they are building across borders of two regions, he said. He also warned that all Jalagagnam projects under construction would not get completed if the state is bifurcated. Pulichintala project is built across the Krishna near Pulichintala village in Guntur district. The project, the last one across Krishna, will stabilize irrigation for about 10 lakh acres in the Krishna delta comprising Krishna, West Godavari, Guntur and Prakasam districts. The project will enable the farmers to raise paddy nurseries as per the schedule without waiting for the release of water from Nagarjunasagar.TOI
